Astronomy Tuesday: Living in a Hologram

It's been a while since I've written about astronomy, so I figured I should get back on it. I just got back from a public lecture given by Leonard Susskind of Stanford University which was this year's Sackler Public Lecture hosted by the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA). Susskind is one of the great living physicists, and is certainly one of the best public lecturers I have ever seen. He has a Feynman-esque quality to his talking, and it's not just the New York accent. The ideas he presented flowed beautifully into one another, and though all his diagrams were obviously created in MS Paint, I never once felt like I was missing the point.

His lecture this evening was about the Holographic Universe, which doesn't have anything to do with holograms like in Star Trek, but instead means that all the 3-dimensional information in the universe can be represented on a 2-dimensional surface, sort of like how the 2D surface of a hologram shows 3D features. The story began with black holes, which are one of my favourite things to talk about (and are, in fact, the area of my research, which I might talk about someday). These objects are essentially points of infinite density that have an imaginary boundary called the "event horizon" which is the point beyond which even light cannot escape the gravitational field of the black hole. That is, you'd need to be traveling faster than the speed of light in order to escape its gravitational pull. Susskind used a nice analogy with fish and a whirlpool in a lake, where past the event horizon, it is impossible for the fish to swim fast enough to escape the whirlpool. It got a little more complicated after that. One of the most fundamental laws of physics, he says, is that information cannot be lost to the Universe. Even when you delete a little piece of information off your hard drive, for example, that information is transformed into heat which goes out into the environment. The problem with this, however, is that when something falls into a black hole, all information about that object is lost to the outside world, since even the light from that object can't escape the black hole's event horizon.

The next issue has to do with entropy. Entropy is a quantity which more or less describes the amount of disorder in a system. In thermodynamics, it's officially defined as the "unavailability of a system's thermal energy for conversion into mechanical work" (Google Dictionary). A commonly-used example is gas in a box. If you have one side of a box that has a bunch of gas molecules in it, and the other side is a vacuum, and you remove the barrier, the gas will go from one side of the box to the other and eventually mix more or less evenly. The idea is that it goes from a state of higher order, with the gas molecules on one side of the box, to a state of less order, with the gas molecules floating all around the box. With a black hole, however, you'd expect the disorder to decrease if some gas fell in past the event horizon because the gas would become part of the black hole, which can be described simply by the size of its event horizon. However, a very smart guy named Jacob Bekenstein used some fancy physics to show that black holes actually have very high entropy, and that it can, in fact, be explained by the following elegant formula:



I'm not going to explain the entire formula, but the important parts are the S on the left hand side and the A on the right hand side. The former represents entropy, and the latter represents the area of the event horizon of the black hole. This means that the entropy of the black hole is directly proportional to its area, and not its volume, as one might expect. It's a mapping of 3D information onto a 2D surface... Just like a hologram!

This still leaves the loss of information problem. However, Susskind and other people then used crazy kinds of string theory (like there's any other kind) to show that deformations on the surface of the event horizon could describe (if you could measure them) the properties of the matter that has fallen in to the black hole. So just like a hologram uses a 2D surface to encode information about 3D objects, the 2D surface of a black hole would encode the information about stuff that's fallen into it. Susskind also said that you could think of the Universe the same way... that information within a certain volume can be encoded on the boundary of this volume. This is called the Holographic Principle. This means that the information contained within the Universe could be described by information encoded on its boundary, that is, its event horizon. Essentially, we're living in a hologram!

If you want to learn more about Leonard Susskind's work, he's written a couple of popular science books: The Cosmic Landscape, where he talks about string theory, and The Black Hole War, where he talks about information and matter falling into black holes. I haven't read either, but I have it on good authority that they're both really good, so go check them out!

Sunspots and Falcons

On Monday, my friend (whom I shall call N) and I gave an astronomy tour to a small group of grade 5 and 6 students from a local elementary school. We started off with a planetarium show, which, amid cries of "Let's fly to Saturn!" and "Oooh! Can you zoom in on that again?", I tried to keep within 45 minutes. Needless to say, our planetarium super rocks.

We then went up to our observatory, where we were able to see the sun through our 8-inch telescope with a solar filter. We actually got to see sunspots, which was pretty impressive... It looked something like this (courtesy SpaceWeather.com):



After all the kiddies had thanked us and left, N and I decided that since we were already on the roof, we may as well hang out on the building's balcony for a while. The balcony looks like this:



As we turned the corner, we both stopped dead in our tracks. Right in front of us, sitting on the edge of the railing, was a really big bird, which I'm pretty sure was a peregrine falcon. We managed to sneak towards it, hiding behind the short columns on the balcony until we were within a few meters of it. At that point, it decided it'd had enough of us and casually jumped off the ledge to fly away. N managed to get some decent pictures with his iPhone:





(Who knows why that last picture looks so strange? I guess we'll say it's impressionist and call it a day.)

CASCA 2010 a.k.a. Good times in Halifax!

One of the major reasons I haven't written in so long is that I've been working like a madwoman trying to get my research ready for CASCA, the annual conference of the Canadian Astronomical Society, which took place at Saint Mary's University in Halifax this year. It was mostly an excuse to travel a bit, meet some new people and drink a lot, but I also enjoyed being immersed in Astronomy.

I presented a poster on my current research, and also gave a talk about the monthly Astronomy Public Tours I help organize. The poster was rushed to the very last minute... I only finished it the afternoon before I got on the plane, and thus had to get it printed in Halifax. The print shop had it ready the half hour before they were closing for the day, and so I rushed to pick it up because I underestimated how much time it would take to walk there. Everything worked out in the end, and I was able to get my poster up by the first poster session. Phew! My talk was slightly less stressful, but only because I didn't have to rely as much on my science smarts. I was in communication with the previous graduate students in charge of the public tours, and so had lots of interesting information to present. People seemed impressed with how much the tours had grown over the last couple of years, since our attendance has more or less tripled in that time.

An addendum to yesterday's post

I've gotten some positive response to yesterday's post about the 150th anniversary edition of Darwin's Origin of Species with the "special" introduction. I got a couple more comments than usual (I generally average around 1), and I even got an email from Robert Luhn, Director of Communications for the National Center for Science Education. Mr. Luhn suggested that I direct my readers to the website for the Don't Diss Darwin Institute, which is a direct response to Ray Comfort's publication of the book. The analysis of the introduction is quite detailed, and there are a bunch of really good links as well.

CASCA and other astro-nerdy stuff

Last week was CASCA, which stands for the "Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Astronomical Society" (I know... astronomers aren't very good with acronyms, though it actually makes sense in French, being "Congrès Annuel de la Société Canadienne d'Astronomie", so that's probably where it comes from, plus, AGMCAS sounds stupid). This year it was held at UofT. It was really interesting, with lots of great talks, lots of free food, and some great socializing.

Some of the highlights (for a full schedule, see here), for me at least, were the session on public outreach (very important, it seems), the Town Hall lunch meeting, the screening of "Hawaiian Starlight", the public lecture by Lawrence Krauss (it was his birthday, and so the entire audience sang for him), the banquet and bar-hopping afterwards, and the cosmology sessions. I also got to see my old professor from BU, Lorne Nelson. Overall, it was a great experience. It felt really good to be among a few hundred of my fellow astronomers.

In other news, another UofT Astronomy Public Tour is taking place on Thursday at 9:10 pm, though I won't be there because I'm taking a little trip down to Montreal, and then to the Townships. If you're in Toronto, you should check it out.

In other other news, I have a second paper on the arXiv! I'm third author, but considering it was work done in my undergrad, I'm not complaining.

Apology

Forgive me internet, for I have neglected my blog. I haven't written in a good two weeks with no real excuse. Sure I've been busy finishing up my first-year project, the culmination of about 6 months of (more or less) intense research, and I've was busy organizing the astronomy department's part of Science Rendezvous, but that's no excuse for the die-hard crafter! By the way, I totally spazzed out and forgot to take pictures at Science Rendezvous. It's probably for the best though... we had some crazy-ass weather, and the day was mostly miserable with poor attendance.

So, to make up for it, I have a whole camera full of pictures to post over the next couple of days. To keep you busy for the moment, here's a sketch of the professor in charge of my first-year project...



Edit (June 3, 2009): I've since been told that about 10,000 people showed up for Science Rendezvous. I guess it wasn't so poorly attended after all!

A new addition to the techno-family

I finally did it... I bought a cell phone! After living in Toronto for over 8 months, I realized that it's really a whole lot more convenient to have one, even if it's just to meet up with people. The real deal-breaker was that I was voluntold into being the organizer for the Astronomy department division of Science Rendezvous. I figured that if I'm going to have to be in a million places at once, people should be able to reach me wherever I am. So yeah... cell phone.

I bought it at the 7-eleven along with a phone card charged up with 100 minutes. I'm on the Speak Out plan, which is pretty convenient because the minutes don't run out for a year. So even if I find that I barely ever use my phone, I won't be losing money on minutes I don't use each month. The phone itself is a Nokia 1208, which was pretty much the cheapest one they had there. Look how shiny it is!



It can call and text. No fancy internet browsing or anything. It has a couple of games (Rapid Roll is really addictive), a calculator, a converter, an alarm clock and a calendar... all pretty basic. My favourite feature is the flashlight:



I can definitely see that coming in handy, especially for public tours!

International Year of Astronomy

Since I'm involved with all this IYA stuff, I feel I should be giving it some good publicity. A couple of months ago, I was involved in the IYA kick-off at the Ontario Science Centre, which involved making planispheres for the kids (and for the young at heart) and showing off some meteorites, along with handing out astronomy pamphlets. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of exhausting.



I'm also one of the assistant coordinators for the UofT Astronomy Public Tours, a programme which allows the general public to have contact with real astronomers and to learn something about astronomy. It generally consists of a public talk at 8pm on the first Thursday of every month (except January) followed by observing through our 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope and our 8" refractor. Generally, there are about 100 people at these tours, and last month we had an exceptional 200+ attendees.



Upcoming events include observing during Earth Hour, which will take place on March 28th at 8:30 pm. For this event, the entire city of Toronto will be turning off their lights for an hour, allowing us a full hour sans light pollution! I'm pretty excited for that.
